Saint Abdullah is a project by my brother and me, based between Brooklyn and Tehran. Our sounds are inspired by our Islamic heritage, having grown up between East and West, surrounded by conservative Shia Islam. We trace back the sounds of our childhood, aspiring to explore our identity; and while doing so, we get lost in the sounds as if we’re children once again, sitting together on the floor of a mosque, trying to make sense of it all. When the forces that shape one’s identity are polarizing – in our case, for example, the beliefs, practices, rhetoric, cultureand storytelling of Eastern mystical Shia Islam vs. the rational thinking and logic of the West- the answers take more time, humility and guts to arrive.
